Group Stage · Group B · BC Place, Vancouver · June 18, 2026

Jonathan David scored a hat trick as Canada beat Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver. It was Canada’s first ever World Cup win, after their 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina had given them their first ever World Cup point.

Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute, and David doubled it in the 29th. Qatar’s Homam Al-Amin was sent off four minutes later for a last-man foul, after a video review upgraded his card. David added a third in first-half stoppage time.

Qatar went down to nine men in the 53rd minute, when Assim Madibo’s card was also upgraded to a red after a review. Substitute Nathan-Dylan Saliba scored in the 64th, Mohamed Naceur Almanai put through his own net in the 75th, and Saliba set up David to complete his hat trick two minutes into stoppage time.

Canada took 14 shots in the first half and 18 in the second, when Qatar did not attempt a single shot. Canada lost Ismaël Koné to injury in the 57th minute, but his replacement, Saliba, scored seven minutes later and finished with a goal and an assist in 33 minutes.

Canada had 79% of the ball, 32 shots and 19 corners. Ten of those shots were on target, for 4.60 expected goals, and Canada completed 515 of 567 passes, or 91%. Qatar did not manage a shot on target, and Maxime Crépeau did not have to make a save. Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada made four.

David put all five of his shots on target and earned a 9.0 match rating, the highest on the field. Alistair Johnston made six key passes and created two big chances, while Richie Laryea added three key passes. Tajon Buchanan completed four dribbles, and Stephen Eustaquio made three tackles in midfield. For Qatar, Akram Afif cleared one effort off the line before he was substituted in the 59th minute.

Canada lined up in a 4-4-2, with David and Larin up front and Buchanan, Koné, Eustaquio and Ali Ahmed in midfield. Qatar started in a 4-3-3 and made three changes by the start of the second half, with Sultan Al-Brake on for Yusuf Abdurisag in the 40th minute and Almanai and Ahmed Fathi introduced at the break.

Canada go top of Group B on goal difference, level with Switzerland on four points. Canada face Switzerland next, while Qatar, on one point after their draw with Switzerland, play Bosnia and Herzegovina.
