Scotland National Football Team

(Scottish Football Association)
Founded in 1872

The Scotland men’s national football team represents Scotland in international competition and is governed by the Scottish Football Association. A founding presence in the global game and a member of FIFA and UEFA, Scotland plays the majority of its home matches at Hampden Park in Glasgow and competes regularly in the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, and UEFA Nations League.

Scotland holds a unique place in football history as one of the world’s oldest national teams, having contested the first official international match against England in 1872. That fixture marked the beginning of one of football’s longest-standing rivalries and laid the foundation for Scotland’s early influence on the international game. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Scotland was widely regarded as one of the strongest sides in world football, enjoying sustained success in the British Home Championship.

On the global stage, Scotland has qualified for the FIFA World Cup nine times and reached the UEFA European Championship finals on four occasions. While progression beyond the group stage has remained elusive, the national team has produced several iconic moments, including a famous victory over reigning world champions England at Wembley in 1967 and memorable World Cup performances in 1974 and 1978, highlighted by one of the tournament’s most celebrated goals against the Netherlands.

Beyond results, Scotland’s football identity is defined by its passionate support and cultural significance. The national team is followed by the renowned Tartan Army, whose loyalty and sportsmanship have become internationally respected. With a history deeply woven into the origins of the sport and a renewed presence in modern European competition, Scotland continues to carry a legacy of tradition, pride, and enduring relevance in international football.
