England National Football Team

(The Football Association)
Founded in 1872

The England men’s national football team represents England in international competition and is governed by the Football Association. A founding member of FIFA and competing within UEFA, England has been a central figure in world football since contesting the first official international match in 1872. The team plays its home matches at Wembley Stadium in London and competes regularly in the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship, and UEFA Nations League.

England holds a unique place in football history as one of the world’s oldest national teams and a pioneer of the international game. The nation’s greatest achievement came in 1966, when England won the FIFA World Cup on home soil, becoming one of a select group of countries to lift the trophy. England has since qualified for the World Cup on sixteen occasions, with notable deep runs including fourth-place finishes in 1990 and 2018.

At the continental level, England has remained a consistent presence at the UEFA European Championship, reaching the final for the first time in 2020 and again in 2024. While a European title has so far eluded them, these back-to-back runner-up finishes marked the most successful period in the tournament’s history for the national team and reinforced England’s status among Europe’s elite.

In the modern era, England is defined by a blend of historic prestige, strong domestic development, and renewed competitive ambition. As the only team representing a non-sovereign nation to have won the World Cup and the only World Cup winner without a major continental title, England continues to balance legacy with expectation, remaining one of international football’s most prominent and closely followed national teams.
