Japan National Football Team

サッカー日本代表
(Japan Football Association)
Founded in 1921

The Japan men’s national football team represents Japan in international competition and is governed by the Japan Football Association. A member of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation, the team is widely known by its nickname, Samurai Blue, and has become one of the most consistently competitive national programs in Asian football.

Japan’s rise to prominence began in the early 1990s following the professionalization of the sport domestically, transforming the national team from an amateur side into a continental powerhouse. Since 1998, Japan has qualified for every FIFA World Cup, advancing to the knockout stage on four occasions. At the continental level, Japan holds a record four AFC Asian Cup titles, establishing itself as the most successful nation in the tournament’s history.

On the global stage, Japan has regularly tested itself against elite international opposition, finishing as runners-up at the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup and competing by invitation in multiple editions of the Copa América. These appearances, combined with consistent World Cup qualification, have reinforced Japan’s reputation for technical discipline, tactical organization, and rapid development within the international game.

In the modern era, Japan remains the highest-ranked Asian national team and a benchmark for football development across the region. Supported by a strong domestic league system and intense regional rivalries, Samurai Blue continues to blend tradition with innovation, positioning Japan as a lasting force in both Asian and world football.
