Netherlands National Football Team

Nederlands voetbalelftal
(Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB))
Founded in 1889

The Netherlands men’s national football team represents the Netherlands in international competition and is governed by the Royal Dutch Football Association. A member of FIFA and competing within UEFA, the national team has been a central figure in world football since its first international appearance in 1905. Home matches are played across several major venues, including the Johan Cruyff Arena and De Kuip.

Widely known as Oranje, the Netherlands has built a global reputation for innovation, technical excellence, and attacking football. The team has reached the FIFA World Cup final on three occasions, in 1974, 1978, and 2010, finishing as runners-up each time, and has appeared in the tournament eleven times overall. At the continental level, the Netherlands captured the UEFA European Championship title in 1988, marking the nation’s greatest international triumph.

The Netherlands’ footballing identity has been shaped by iconic eras and influential figures, particularly during the rise of “Total Football” in the 1970s, which left a lasting impact on how the game is played worldwide. Alongside their World Cup and European Championship success, the Dutch also claimed bronze medals at three Olympic football tournaments in the early 20th century, highlighting a long-standing presence on the international stage.

In the modern era, the Netherlands continues to balance tradition with renewal, consistently producing elite players and remaining a regular contender at major tournaments. Supported by a passionate fan base known as the Orange Legion and fueled by historic rivalries across Europe and beyond, Oranje remains one of international football’s most respected and influential national teams.
