Australia Soccer

Australia National Football Team

(Football Australia)
Founded in 1922

The Australia men’s national football team represents Australia in international competition and is governed by Football Australia. Officially known as the Socceroos, the team is a member of FIFA and competes within the Asian Football Confederation, marking a significant chapter in Australia’s modern football identity.

Australia’s international journey began in 1922 and was shaped for decades by geographic isolation and competition within the Oceania Football Confederation. During that era, the Socceroos dominated regional play, winning multiple OFC Nations Cup titles and producing record-setting results in World Cup qualification, though consistent qualification remained elusive due to intercontinental playoff requirements. Their long-awaited breakthrough came in 1974 with their first FIFA World Cup appearance.

A transformative moment arrived in 2006 when Australia transitioned from Oceania to Asia, a move that elevated the team’s competitive landscape. Since joining the AFC, Australia has qualified for every FIFA World Cup, reached the knockout stages in 2006 and 2022, and captured the AFC Asian Cup in 2015 as tournament hosts. That victory made Australia the only nation to win continental championships in two different confederations.

In the modern era, the Socceroos are defined by resilience, adaptability, and sustained global relevance. With a growing football culture, historic rivalries, and a consistent presence at major tournaments, Australia has firmly established itself as a competitive force in Asian and world football, blending a proud past with continued ambition on the international stage.
