Ghana National Football Team

(Ghana Football Association)
Founded in 1957

The Ghana men’s national football team represents Ghana in international competition and is governed by the Ghana Football Association. A member of FIFA and competing within the Confederation of African Football, the team is widely known as the Black Stars, a name drawn from the national symbol of African independence.

Ghana is among Africa’s most storied football nations, having won the Africa Cup of Nations four times, in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982, while finishing runners-up on five additional occasions. The Black Stars first qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and quickly established themselves as a competitive force on the global stage, reaching the round of 16 in their debut tournament.

The team’s most iconic World Cup performance came in 2010, when Ghana advanced to the quarter-finals, becoming only the third African nation to reach that stage. That tournament featured one of the most dramatic matches in World Cup history and cemented Ghana’s reputation for athleticism, resilience, and high-level competition against the world’s elite. Ghana has since returned to the World Cup multiple times, including qualification for the 2026 tournament.

Beyond senior competition, Ghana’s football pedigree is reinforced by its youth success, highlighted by winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009, the first African nation to achieve the feat. In the modern era, the Black Stars continue to balance a proud continental legacy with ongoing renewal, remaining one of Africa’s most recognizable and influential national teams on the international stage.
