Austria National Football Team

Österreichische Fußballnationalmannschaft
(Austrian Football Association)
Founded in 1894

The Austria men’s national football team represents Austria in international competition and is governed by the Austrian Football Association. A member of FIFA and competing within UEFA, Austria has been an established presence in European football since the early 20th century, with a history shaped by both sporting innovation and geopolitical change.

Austria first rose to prominence in the 1930s under coach Hugo Meisl, when the celebrated Wunderteam became one of Europe’s most influential sides. That era produced a fourth-place finish at the 1934 FIFA World Cup and a silver medal at the 1936 Olympic Games. After World War II, Austria returned to the global stage with its greatest World Cup achievement, finishing third at the 1954 tournament and reaffirming its place among the world’s leading teams of the time.

The national team experienced renewed success in the late 1970s and early 1980s, reaching the second round of the 1978 and 1982 FIFA World Cups. The 1978 tournament included one of Austria’s most famous victories, a win over West Germany that remains a defining moment in the nation’s footballing memory. These performances highlighted Austria’s ability to compete with Europe’s strongest sides across multiple generations.

Following fluctuating fortunes in the 1990s and 2000s, Austria entered a modern resurgence marked by consistent qualification for major tournaments, including multiple UEFA European Championships and a return to the FIFA World Cup for the 2026 edition. In the contemporary era, Austria continues to blend historic pedigree with renewed ambition, positioning itself once again as a competitive force in European and international football.
