Portugal National Football Team

Seleção Portuguesa de Futebol
(Portuguese Football Federation (FPF))
Founded in 1921

The Portugal men’s national football team represents Portugal in international competition and is governed by the Portuguese Football Federation. A member of FIFA and competing within UEFA, Portugal has been a fixture in international football since 1921. Known colloquially as the Seleção das Quinas, the team plays home matches across the country and draws from one of Europe’s strongest footballing traditions.

Portugal first rose to global prominence at the 1966 FIFA World Cup, where a team led by Eusébio finished third, marking the nation’s breakthrough on the world stage. After establishing greater consistency from the late 1990s onward, Portugal began an uninterrupted run of qualification for major tournaments, reaching the semi-finals of multiple European Championships and finishing fourth at the 2006 World Cup.

The defining moment in Portugal’s modern history came in 2016, when they captured their first major international title by winning the UEFA European Championship. That success was followed by victory at the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019 and a second Nations League triumph in 2025, giving Portugal three major senior titles. These achievements were shaped by generations of elite players, including Ballon d’Or winners Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo, the latter becoming the most-capped and highest-scoring player in the team’s history.

In the contemporary era, Portugal is recognized for its depth, technical quality, and sustained competitiveness at the highest level. With a blend of experienced leaders and emerging talent, the Seleção das Quinas remains one of Europe’s most respected national teams, consistently positioned among the contenders at major international tournaments.
