Gilberto Mora Is Back! 60 Days To Work On Form & Fitness

Gilberto Mora Returns From Injury as World Cup Dream Stays Alive

Good news for Mexico national football team.

Gilberto Mora is back—and with it, his hopes of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup are very much alive.

With just over two months to go before the tournament, the 17-year-old midfielder has made his return from injury and is now pushing to earn a place in the final squad.

Injury Scare Nearly Ended His Chances

Mora’s World Cup hopes were in serious doubt.

A groin injury kept him sidelined for nearly two months, and at one point there were real concerns that he could miss the tournament entirely.

Now, with 61 days remaining before kickoff, the young midfielder has officially returned to action—reviving what once looked like a fading opportunity.

Back on the Field—and Making an Impact

Mora made his return for Club Tijuana in a crucial win over FC Juárez during Week 14 of the Clausura 2026 season.

He played 28 minutes, but it didn’t take long to remind everyone why he’s considered one of Mexico’s brightest young talents.

Even in a limited role, Mora showed:

  • Composure on the ball
  • Technical quality
  • Amazing vision
  • Precision passing
  • Confidence beyond his age

Already Proven on the International Stage

For Mora, this isn’t new.

He has already delivered on big stages for Mexico.

2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup

  • Matches: 3
  • Goals: 0
  • Assists: 1

At just 16 years old, Mora was a standout player during the tournament, helping lead Mexico to the title.

He even started in the final against United States men’s national soccer team, where Mexico secured a 2-1 victory in Houston.

With that achievement, Mora made history:

👉 Youngest player ever to win a major senior international tournament, breaking records previously held by Lamine Yamal and Pelé.

Dominance at the U-20 Level

Mora has also impressed at the youth level.

U-20 World Cup

  • Matches: 5
  • Goals: 3
  • Assists: 2

He was one of Mexico’s best players as they advanced to the quarterfinals, where they were ultimately eliminated by Chile national football team.

His performances showcased his ability to:

  • Create chances
  • Score goals
  • Control the tempo

No Contact Yet With Aguirre

Despite his return and strong résumé, Mora says he has not yet heard from Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre.

But his mindset is clear.

“So far I haven’t had any contact with Javier Aguirre, but I’m going to do everything on my part—give everything in every training session and every game so I can be called up.”

A Tough Run Ahead in TJ

Time is limited—and the competition is only getting tougher.

Tijuana currently sits eighth in the table with 18 points, still fighting for a playoff spot. But their remaining schedule is challenging:

  • Away vs Cruz Azul
  • Home vs Pachuca
  • Away vs Chivas

These matches will be critical—not just for the club, but for Mora’s World Cup chances.

Final Push Toward 2026

Mora’s return couldn’t have come at a better time.

He has already proven he can perform on the biggest stages—even as a teenager.

Now, the mission is simple:

Stay healthy. Get minutes. Force the decision.

Because if his form returns at the right time, Mexico may not be able to leave him off the squad.

Gilberto Mora is back—and his World Cup dream is very real.
