Late Muheim Own Goal Rescues Qatar Draw Against Switzerland

Group Stage · Group B · Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara · June 13, 2026

Qatar stole a point at the death in Santa Clara, as Boualem Khoukhi’s header went in off Miro Muheim in the 94th minute to cancel out Breel Embolo’s penalty and finish 1-1 with Switzerland.

Switzerland went ahead in the 17th minute. Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada brought down Remo Freuler, the penalty stood after a video review, and Embolo converted. The Swiss then had 68% of the ball and 26 shots, creating 3.20 expected goals to Qatar’s 0.60, but could not find a second. Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada made five saves to keep his side in it.

It is Qatar’s first ever point at a World Cup. The late equalizer also means all four Group B teams have one point after the first round, following Canada’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday.
