Senegal Claim Second AFCON Crown After Heroics Against Morocco

Rabat, Morocco — January 18, 2026 — In a dramatic and tightly contested Africa Cup of Nations final, Senegal secured a 1–0 victory over hosts Morocco after extra time to lift the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2025 title.

After a stalemate through 90 minutes of regulation, it was Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye who delivered the decisive moment early in extra time. In the 93rd minute, Gueye struck a powerful left-footed shot from just outside the penalty area into the top corner — a finish that sparked wild celebration from the Teranga Lions and stunned the packed stadium.

A Final of Fine Margins

The final had been a cagey and balanced affair from the beginning, with neither side able to find a way past the other during normal time.

Senegal’s attempt to take the lead in regulation was thwarted when they were denied by a late penalty miss. After a VAR review awarded Morocco a spot-kick in stoppage time, Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy stood tall, saving Brahim Diaz’s attempt and keeping the scores level, pushing the contest into extra time.

Morocco’s Quest for Glory

Morocco came into the final chasing their first Africa Cup of Nations title in nearly 50 years, buoyed by the support of the home crowd in Rabat. The Atlas Lions created opportunities throughout, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou called into action to keep Senegal at bay earlier in the match.

Despite creating pressure and chances after the break, Morocco could not find a breakthrough before or after the interval. Their best opportunities in the final stages were denied — including Bounou’s crucial interventions and late efforts that narrowly missed their target.

Senegal Show Resilience and Calm

Senegal, meanwhile, managed the game with discipline and strategic patience. Their tactical organisation ensured they remained compact and dangerous on the counter throughout the contest. When the breakthrough finally came, it was worthy of the occasion — a moment of individual brilliance from one of their tournament standouts.

A Moment of History

With the final whistle confirming the result, Senegal claimed their second AFCON title, having last won the competition in 2021. The victory further cements their status among Africa’s elite, while Morocco is left to reflect on a gallant performance that came just short on the night.

Pape Gueye was named Man of the Match after his crucial goal in extra time.
