Switzerland Selects San Diego as Base Camp for 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Switzerland men’s national football team has chosen San Diego, California, as its training base during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Swiss Football Association confirmed that the team will stay at the luxury Fairmont Grand Del Mar resort in northern San Diego while preparing for matches during the tournament.

Elite Facilities for World Cup Preparation

Switzerland will train at facilities at San Diego Jewish Academy, located roughly eight minutes from the team’s hotel. The site provides high-quality training pitches and modern performance facilities designed for elite football preparation.

The quiet location and proximity to training grounds were key factors in the decision, allowing players to focus on preparation while remaining close to travel connections.

A delegation led by head coach Murat Yakin visited several potential base camp locations in California before selecting San Diego as the team’s preferred option.

Strategic Location for the Tournament

San Diego offers Switzerland a comfortable environment for the group stage of the tournament, which will take place across multiple cities in North America.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026, marking the first World Cup jointly hosted by three countries and the first to feature 48 teams.

Teams typically select a base camp where they stay and train throughout the group stage before traveling to match locations. These facilities serve as a “home away from home” for players and staff during the competition.

Switzerland’s Road to the World Cup

Switzerland qualified for the tournament after finishing top of its UEFA qualifying group, extending the country’s streak of consistent appearances on football’s biggest stage.

At the World Cup draw, the Swiss national team was placed in Group B, where it will face Canada, Qatar, and the winner of UEFA Playoff Path A during the opening stage of the competition.

With preparations already underway, Switzerland will now focus on building momentum as the tournament approaches and as the team aims to reach the knockout stage once again.
