Colombia National Football Team

Federación Colombiana de Fútbol
(Colombia Football Association)
Founded in 1924

The Colombian national football team, officially known as La Selección, is managed by the Colombian Football Federation and competes internationally under the banner of Los Cafeteros, owing to Colombia’s renowned coffee production. With a rich history spanning numerous FIFA World Cup appearances, including notable showings in 1990, 1994, 1998, 2014, and 2018, Colombia has established itself as a formidable force on the global stage.

Their most memorable World Cup campaign came in 2014, hosted by Brazil, where they advanced to the quarter-finals, marking their deepest run in the tournament’s history. Additionally, Colombia clinched the Copa América title in 2001, when they hosted the competition, displaying exceptional defensive prowess and clinching victory without conceding a single goal.

In regional competitions, Colombia has consistently demonstrated their prowess, securing gold and bronze medals in the Central American and Caribbean Games, and podium finishes in the Bolivarian Games, affirming their dominance in various arenas of competition.

Throughout their storied journey, Colombia has been propelled by a roster of esteemed players, including René Higuita, Carlos Valderrama, Faustino Asprilla, and Freddy Rincón, who achieved acclaim in top European leagues during the 1990s, contributing to Colombia’s golden era in football.

Under the tutelage of José Pékerman, Colombia experienced a resurgence, culminating in an impressive run in the 2014 World Cup. James Rodríguez emerged as a standout performer, earning the Golden Boot for his goal-scoring prowess and leaving an indelible mark on the tournament with his memorable strikes.

As Colombia continues to strive for excellence, guided by veterans like David Ospina and Radamel Falcao, the legacy of La Selección endures as a testament to the nation’s enduring passion for football and its ability to compete at the highest level on the international stage.
