Senegal Soccer  Senegal National Football Team

Équipe de football du Senegal
(Senegalese Football Federation)
Founded in 1960

The Senegal men’s national football team represents Senegal in international competition and is governed by the Senegalese Football Federation. A member of FIFA and competing within the Confederation of African Football, the team is widely known as Les Lions de la Teranga, a nickname that reflects the country’s values of pride, resilience, and hospitality.

Senegal emerged as a global football force at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, producing one of the tournament’s most memorable runs. After defeating defending champions France in the opening match, Senegal advanced from the group stage and eliminated Sweden in the round of 16 before falling to Turkey in the quarter-finals. That performance made Senegal only the second African nation to reach the World Cup quarter-finals and firmly established the team on the world stage.

At the continental level, Senegal has been one of Africa’s most consistent competitors. The Lions of Teranga have won the Africa Cup of Nations twice, capturing their first title in 2021 and adding a second in 2025. In addition, Senegal finished runners-up in the tournament in 2002 and 2019, underscoring a sustained period of excellence across multiple generations.

In the modern era, Senegal continues to combine athleticism, tactical discipline, and elite player development. With continental titles secured and a strong reputation in global competition, the Lions of Teranga remain one of Africa’s leading national teams and a regular contender on the international stage.
