South Africa National Football Team

(South African Football Association)
Founded in 1948

The South Africa men’s national football team represents South Africa in international competition and is governed by the South African Football Association. A member of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football, the team is widely known by its nickname, Bafana Bafana, and is recognized across the continent for its distinctive yellow-and-green kits and passionate national support.

South Africa’s football journey has been shaped by both early participation and prolonged absence from the global stage. After first competing internationally in 1906, the national team was barred from FIFA competitions for decades due to the apartheid system, returning to international football in 1992. Since then, South Africa has qualified for multiple FIFA World Cups, including appearances in 1998 and 2002, and notably hosted the 2010 tournament, becoming the first African nation to stage a World Cup.

The team’s most celebrated achievement came in 1996, when South Africa hosted and won the Africa Cup of Nations, a landmark victory that symbolized the country’s re-emergence in international sport. A second AFCON final appearance followed in 1998, further cementing Bafana Bafana’s place among Africa’s established football nations. These successes remain central to the team’s modern identity and competitive legacy.

In the contemporary era, South Africa continues to build on its historical foundations while navigating a competitive African landscape. Qualification for the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup signals renewed momentum and opportunity, as the national team looks to combine its proud history, strong domestic support, and developing talent base to reassert itself on the global stage.
