Canada Drawn With Switzerland, Qatar and European Playoff Winner in 2026 World Cup

The draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has placed the Canada men’s national soccer team in Group B, where the co-hosts will face Switzerland national football team, Qatar national football team, and the winner of UEFA Playoff Path A.

The historic draw means Canada will play its group-stage matches at home in front of local supporters during the first World Cup hosted on Canadian soil.

Historic Home Tournament

Canada will open its tournament campaign on June 12, 2026, in Toronto against the eventual winner of the European playoff path, which could include teams such as Italy, Wales, Bosnia and Herzegovina, or Northern Ireland.

The team will then travel to Vancouver for its remaining group matches. Canada will face Qatar on June 18 before finishing the group stage against Switzerland on June 24 at BC Place.

With matches scheduled in two Canadian host cities, the tournament marks a major milestone for the country’s soccer program.

A New Era for Canadian Soccer

Canada will be making its third appearance at the FIFA World Cup and its first back-to-back participation in the tournament.

The national team returned to the World Cup stage in 2022 after a 36-year absence and will now compete again as one of the tournament’s host nations alongside the United States and Mexico.

Head coach Jesse Marsch said the draw provides a clear focus for the team as preparations begin for the biggest tournament in the sport.

“What an incredible opportunity this World Cup will provide our country,” Marsch said following the draw. “We now know our group opponents and will spend every opportunity preparing for the matches ahead.”

Road to the Knockout Stage

Group B will be one of the most closely watched groups of the tournament as Canada looks to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in its history.

Switzerland brings extensive World Cup experience, while Qatar will be looking to build on its appearance at the 2022 tournament. The final spot in the group will be decided through the UEFA playoff path, potentially adding another strong European side to the competition.

With the expanded 48-team format, the top two teams in each group — and possibly the best third-place teams — will advance to the knockout stage.

For Canada, playing at home could provide a crucial advantage as the country prepares to host the biggest sporting event in its history.
