Final Six Nations Qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™

The final six nations have officially secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, completing the expanded 48-team tournament field after a dramatic set of playoff matches filled with late goals, penalty shootout tension, and extra-time heroics. With qualification on the line in every fixture, the intensity was evident from the opening minutes, as teams battled not just for victory, but for a place on football’s biggest stage.

Across the decisive fixtures, several key moments defined the night. Bosnia & Herzegovina held their nerve against Italy in a tightly contested match that stretched to penalties, converting four times in the shootout to secure qualification. Italy’s challenge was made significantly harder after being reduced to ten men following a first-half red card, a turning point that shifted momentum and forced them into a more defensive approach for the remainder of the match.

Czechia advanced after a 2–2 draw with Denmark, showing composure in the decisive moments to come through under pressure. Sweden’s 3–2 win over Poland stood out as one of the most entertaining matches of the round, with attacking quality on display from both sides. Türkiye earned qualification with a disciplined 1–0 victory over Kosovo, relying on a strong defensive structure to protect their lead.

In the intercontinental playoff, DR Congo secured their place with an extra-time victory over Jamaica in a physically demanding contest that required patience and resilience. Iraq completed the final lineup with a determined 2–1 win over Bolivia, sealing the last available spot and bringing the qualification process to a dramatic conclusion.

From long-awaited returns to rare appearances on the global stage, these six nations now prepare to compete in North America in what will be the largest World Cup in history.

Sweden Return to the World Cup Stage

Sweden booked their place with a 3–2 victory over Poland, sealing qualification in a tightly contested playoff.

This marks Sweden’s return to the FIFA World Cup™ after missing out in 2022. Sweden reached the quarter-finals in 2018, finished as runners-up in 1958, and finished third in 1994.

Bosnia & Herzegovina Qualify for Second World Cup

Bosnia & Herzegovina produced one of the standout results of the playoffs, defeating Italy in a penalty shootout after a 1–1 draw.

This will be just the second FIFA World Cup™ appearance in the nation’s history, with their first coming in 2014.

They were eliminated in the group stage in their debut tournament and now return to the competition for the first time in more than a decade.

Czechia End Long World Cup Absence

Czechia secured qualification by defeating Denmark on penalties following a 2–2 draw.

The nation returns to the World Cup for the first time since 2006.

As part of Czechoslovakia, they also have World Cup final appearances in 1934 and 1962.

Türkiye Back at the World Cup After 2002

Türkiye earned their place with a 1–0 victory over Kosovo.

This marks their first FIFA World Cup™ appearance since 2002, when they finished third.

That 2002 tournament remains Türkiye’s best World Cup finish.

DR Congo Return for First Time Since 1974

DR Congo secured qualification with a 1–0 victory over Jamaica after extra time.

This will be their first FIFA World Cup™ appearance since 1974, when they competed as Zaire.

Iraq Qualify for Second World Cup Appearance

Iraq claimed the final qualifying spot with a 2–1 victory over Bolivia.

This will be Iraq’s second FIFA World Cup™ appearance, with their only previous participation coming in 1986.

Iraq have also won the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, the nation’s biggest title in continental competition.

The Expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup™ Brings New Opportunities

The 2026 FIFA World Cup™ will be the first to feature 48 teams, expanding the tournament and creating new opportunities for nations across every confederation.

The final six nations to qualify include teams returning after long absences, teams making rare appearances, and teams with established World Cup histories.

  • Historic returns: DR Congo, Türkiye
  • Rare appearances: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Iraq
  • Established nations returning: Sweden, Czechia

With matches set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, these teams now join the 2026 field ahead of the tournament draw and group-stage preparations.

The journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ has delivered drama, tension, and defining moments, and the final six nations to qualify now move on to the biggest stage in international football.

For some, it is a long-awaited return. For others, it is only the beginning.

Now, the world stage awaits.
