Granit Xhaka Fighting Through Injury as Switzerland Prepare for 2026 World Cup

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka remains one of the most influential figures in Swiss football as the country prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite dealing with an ankle injury during the 2025-26 club season, the experienced midfielder continues to play a central role for both club and country heading into the tournament.

The 33-year-old midfielder has built a reputation as Switzerland’s on-field leader, combining tactical discipline, passing ability, and strong leadership qualities that have made him one of the most important players in the national team setup.

Injury Concerns Late in the Season

Xhaka recently missed several matches after suffering an ankle injury that kept him sidelined for multiple weeks during the winter stretch of the season. Medical staff initially expected the midfielder to be out for roughly three weeks while recovering from the issue.

The injury temporarily halted a run of strong performances where Xhaka had started nearly every match for his club prior to the setback. His absence highlighted just how important he remains to the midfield structure of his team.

Encouragingly for Switzerland, the veteran midfielder has already begun returning to action. After missing several matches, he made his comeback in league play and quickly demonstrated his leadership by organizing the midfield and helping stabilize the team’s performance during a difficult stretch of the season.

A Leader for Switzerland

For more than a decade, Xhaka has been a cornerstone of the Switzerland men’s national football team. Since making his senior debut in 2011, he has become one of the most capped players in the nation’s history and has served as captain in multiple major tournaments.

His experience includes appearances at several FIFA World Cups and European Championships, where his ability to control the tempo of matches has been vital to Switzerland’s consistent success in international competitions.

The midfielder has also enjoyed major club achievements during his career, including winning domestic trophies in Switzerland and Germany and lifting the FA Cup during his time with Arsenal.

Form Heading Toward the World Cup

Despite the ankle issue earlier in the season, Xhaka has maintained strong form overall. His performances at club level have continued to highlight his ability to dictate play, break up opposition attacks, and lead younger teammates on the pitch.

Managers and teammates frequently praise his calmness and leadership, describing him as a player who sets the tone for the team both tactically and mentally.

That leadership will be especially important as Switzerland prepares for the challenges of the expanded 48-team tournament.

Key Role for Switzerland in 2026

Switzerland has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most consistent international teams, reaching the knockout stages in multiple recent major tournaments. Much of that stability has come from the presence of experienced players like Xhaka in midfield.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Switzerland will once again look to their captain to guide the team through the group stage and into the knockout rounds.

If fully fit, Xhaka’s leadership, experience, and tactical intelligence could prove crucial as Switzerland aims to make another deep run on football’s biggest stage.
