Iran and Qatar Miss FIFA World Cup Planning Workshop in Atlanta

Representatives from Iran and Qatar were absent from a recent FIFA planning workshop in Atlanta as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The three-day meeting brought together officials from national football federations whose teams have already qualified or remain in contention for the tournament. The workshop focused on logistical planning for the competition, including team services, stadium operations, media coordination, and security arrangements.

Conflict Disrupts Participation

Iran’s absence came amid escalating geopolitical tensions following military strikes involving the United States and Israel. The conflict has created uncertainty surrounding travel and international sporting events connected to the region.

Iranian football federation president Mehdi Taj recently suggested the situation could affect the country’s participation in the World Cup, stating that the attacks had made it difficult for the nation to look forward to the tournament with optimism.

Iran is scheduled to open its World Cup campaign on June 15 in Los Angeles against New Zealand if the team participates in the tournament as planned.

Qatar Unable to Travel

Qatar was also unable to attend the workshop. According to reports, the Qatari delegation could not leave the country after air travel in parts of the region was temporarily suspended during the conflict.

Despite the absence of the two nations, the Atlanta meeting continued with other qualified teams represented.

Planning for the 2026 Tournament

FIFA’s team workshop is part of the final preparation phase before the tournament begins in North America. During the event, federation representatives review operational details such as:

  • match organization

  • team facilities

  • logistics and travel planning

  • broadcasting and media operations

  • safety and security protocols

Teams attending the meeting were also expected to inspect potential base camp facilities before leaving Atlanta later in the week.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico and will feature an expanded field of 48 teams, making it the largest tournament in the competition’s history.

While preparations continue across host cities, geopolitical tensions in parts of the world could still create complications as the tournament approaches.

For now, FIFA continues planning for a full tournament with all qualified teams expected to participate.
