Jens Castrop Makes History With First South Korea National Team Call-Up

South Korea has entered a new chapter in its football history with the arrival of midfielder Jens Castrop, who became the first foreign-born, mixed-race player to represent the men’s national team.

Castrop made his senior debut for South Korea men’s national football team during a friendly victory over the United States, entering the match in the 63rd minute and marking a historic moment for the program.

A Unique Path to the National Team

Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, Castrop is the son of a German father and a South Korean mother. He developed his football career in Germany’s club system and represented Germany at several youth international levels before eventually switching his national team allegiance to South Korea.

After applying for a one-time nationality switch, FIFA approved the change in 2025, making him eligible to represent South Korea at the senior level.

Shortly afterward, head coach Hong Myung-bo included the midfielder in the national team squad for international friendlies.

Club Career in Germany

Castrop built his early career in the youth academies of Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1. FC Köln before beginning his professional journey in Germany’s second division.

Strong performances with 1. FC Nürnberg helped establish him as a promising midfielder, eventually leading to a move to Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Known for his energetic style of play, Castrop can operate as a box-to-box midfielder and is valued for his physicality, versatility, and ability to drive forward with the ball.

A Cultural Milestone for Korean Football

Although mixed-heritage players are common in many national teams around the world, Castrop’s call-up represents a significant milestone for South Korean football, which historically has rarely selected foreign-born players.

The move reflects a changing era for the national team as football continues to globalize and as players with multicultural backgrounds become more common in international squads.

Looking Ahead to the World Cup

With South Korea preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Castrop’s arrival could provide additional depth in midfield alongside established stars like Son Heung‑min and Lee Kang‑in.

While he did not play a role during World Cup qualifying, strong performances at club level could give the 22-year-old a chance to earn a spot in the tournament squad.

For South Korea, Castrop’s debut represents more than just another new player. It signals the beginning of a broader evolution in the national team as it prepares to compete on football’s biggest stage.
