The Cape Verde men’s national football team represents Cape Verde in international competition and is governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. A member of FIFA and competing within the Confederation of African Football, the team is widely known by its nickname, the Tubarões Azuis (Blue Sharks), and plays the majority of its home matches at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde.

After gaining independence in 1975, Cape Verde steadily built its international football presence, entering Africa Cup of Nations qualification for the first time in the early 1990s and beginning World Cup qualification campaigns in the 2000s. The national team made a major breakthrough by qualifying for its first Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, reaching the quarter-finals in its debut appearance and establishing itself as a competitive emerging nation on the continental stage.

Cape Verde has since maintained consistent progress, qualifying for multiple AFCON tournaments and again reaching the quarter-finals in 2023. These performances highlighted the team’s growing tactical organization, physical resilience, and effective integration of players developed abroad, many of whom represent the country’s extensive diaspora across Europe and beyond.

The program reached a historic milestone with qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking Cape Verde’s first appearance at the tournament. That achievement made the nation one of the smallest by land area ever to qualify for a World Cup and underscored a remarkable rise in international football. In the modern era, the Blue Sharks continue to build on this momentum, combining national pride with global experience to strengthen their standing on the world stage.
