Switzerland National Football Team

Schweizer Fussballnationalmannschaft
(Swiss Football Association)
Founded in 1895

The Switzerland men’s national football team represents Switzerland in international competition and is governed by the Swiss Football Association. A long-standing member of FIFA and a core participant in European competition under UEFA, Switzerland has built a reputation for discipline, organization, and competitive consistency across multiple footballing eras.

Switzerland’s early international legacy includes some of its most notable tournament achievements. The national team earned a silver medal at the 1924 Olympic Games and reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup on three occasions, in 1934, 1938, and 1954. The 1954 tournament, hosted by Switzerland, produced one of the most famous matches in World Cup history—a 7–5 quarter-final defeat to Austria that remains the highest-scoring match ever played at the competition.

In the modern era, Switzerland has become a reliable presence at major international tournaments, particularly in European Championships. After co-hosting UEFA Euro 2008, the team progressed to the knockout stages at Euro 2016 and achieved a landmark quarter-final run at Euro 2020, highlighted by the elimination of reigning world champions France. That achievement was matched again at Euro 2024, when Switzerland advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating defending champions Italy.

Across recent World Cups and European Championships, Switzerland has been defined by defensive organization and tournament resilience, including record-setting defensive performances in 2006 and 2010. Consistent qualification and competitive knockout appearances have reinforced Switzerland’s status as one of Europe’s most dependable national teams, blending historic pedigree with sustained modern success on the international stage.
