Morocco National Football Team

المنتخب المغربي لكرة القدم
( Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF))
Founded in 1928

The Morocco men’s national football team represents Morocco in international competition and is governed by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. A member of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football, the team is widely known as the Atlas Lions and has long been regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished and respected football nations.

Morocco’s continental success includes four major African titles, highlighted by their triumph at the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations and multiple African Nations Championship victories. The national team has qualified for the FIFA World Cup on seven occasions, first making global history in 1986 as the first African side to win a group and advance to the knockout stage. That milestone established Morocco as a continental trailblazer on the world stage.

The Atlas Lions reached unprecedented heights at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they topped a group featuring established European powers before defeating Spain and Portugal in the knockout rounds. Their historic run made Morocco the first African and Arab nation to reach a World Cup semi-final, and only the third team from outside Europe or South America to do so. This achievement marked one of the most significant moments in modern World Cup history and elevated Morocco’s global standing.

In the modern era, Morocco has combined competitive consistency with elite player development, regularly ranking among the world’s top national teams and holding Africa’s highest FIFA ranking since late 2022. Looking ahead, Morocco is set to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, becoming the first North African nation to stage the tournament and further cementing its legacy as a leading force in international football.
